Mentorship & Mindset | Heather McGuire, RDH

Find out how Heather’s unique mindset & background led her to become the influential voice in the dental industry she is today.

Heather McGuire began her career in dentistry as a dental assistant in 2004 who passed out while assisting the dentist with an extraction. She then became a sterilization tech due to her aversion to seeing blood. She would set up and breakdown the rooms after procedures and sterilized all the instruments.

While at her initial dental job she enjoyed watching what the dental hygienist did with their patients. She enjoyed learning from the hygienists in her office and decided to go to hygiene school herself. While in hygiene school she was very active in the leadership aspect of school despite being a single mom with three young boys. She was class president, as well as student delegate to the Michigan dental association, and eagerly learned about the industry.

After school she practiced clinically for 10 years. At one point in her career, she started to desire something different in her career. She began seeking out different opportunities. She joined OraPharma as an account manager supporting offices with Arestin and bone grafting. She enjoyed networking and having experiences with over 200 offices within her territory. She stayed with the company for three years.

She then had the opportunity to go to Elite Dental Partners as a regional hygiene manager then regional clinical success manager. Her previous experience with Orapharma helped her as the regional success manager, as she was able use what she learned about bone grafting, implants, and clear aligners to support the dentists as well as continuing to partner and develop and support the hygiene program. Recently she signed as the director of dental hygiene development with Save A Dental.

She is a certified master technician of neurolinguistic programming as well as a master practitioner of mental and emotional release. She is a certified coach in both professions. Her work involves helping clients to understand how we communicate with ourselves and others. She does individual and group coaching as well as helping offices with treatment plan acceptance. Her consulting work has helped private offices and DSO’s on how to structure organizations to empower and grow their teams.

Having a positive mindset is critical to gaining new opportunities. At times we will only see what we look for. Working with coaches or mentors has proved essential to her career growth and the being receptive to accepting opportunities that aligned with her. When she is faced with challenges, she searches out experts in the area she needs help in to overcome that challenge. Her wealth of experience is an asset to our community and an inspiration to all.
